Why creators choose this video frame extractor

Built for people who need the right frame, not just a frame: AI video makers, editors, designers and researchers.

Step through real frames of any frame rate

Each press of the arrow key moves exactly one frame of your video, whether it was shot at 24, 30 or 60 fps. The extractor measures the true frame length of the file before you start, so the frame number and timecode you see always match the image you save. No repeated frames, no skipped frames.

AI video models create short clips. To build a longer scene, you start each new clip from the final image of the previous one. Click Last frame and the tool lands on the true final frame at full resolution, then Use last frame in Image to Video opens the generator with that image already loaded.

Guide: how to extract frames from video like a pro

Everything you need to know to get clean, exact stills out of any clip.

What is a video frame extractor?

A video frame extractor is a tool that saves single frames of a video as image files. You open a clip, move to the moment you want and export that frame as a PNG or JPG at the video's full resolution.

Video is a fast sequence of still images, usually 24, 30 or 60 every second, so each frame is a complete picture. Turning video to image files this way gives you thumbnails, references, storyboard panels, training images or the first frame of a new AI shot.

Frame rate and frame numbers explained

Frame rate is the number of frames shown each second. A 10 second clip at 30 fps holds 300 frames; at 60 fps two neighbouring frames are only about 17 milliseconds apart, which is why a precise frame number beats a timestamp typed in seconds.

In this tool frame numbers start at 0, so the first frame is frame 0 and the last frame is the frame count minus one. The timecode shows when each frame begins. Both are shown on top of the preview and in the name of every file you export.

Video to PNG, JPG or WebP: which format to choose

PNG is lossless. Pick it when you plan to edit, upscale or animate the frame, because no detail is thrown away. Video to JPG gives much smaller files that open everywhere, ideal for sharing, slides and email. WebP is the web format: small files with sharp detail for pages and blog posts.

When in doubt, export PNG at the original size. You can always make a smaller copy later, but you cannot bring back detail that compression removed.

Tips for turning a video to frames in bulk

Every frame is ideal for animation reference and machine learning datasets, but even a short clip produces a lot of images. For storyboards and contact sheets, one frame per second is usually plenty.

Set the From and To frames first so you only export the part you need. Choose JPG or WebP for long ranges to keep the ZIP small, and PNG when every pixel matters.

Getting a clean screenshot from a video

Pause near the moment you want, then use Find sharpest frame to pick the crispest image nearby. Work from the original file whenever you can: copies downloaded from social apps have been compressed again and carry less detail.

Export at full size and crop or resize afterwards. Every format your browser plays opens right away, including MP4, WebM and MOV clips from phones, cameras and AI video generators. For other codecs, export the clip as an H.264 MP4 first.
